After winning a contract at the Cape Town Marriott Crystal Towers, Marriott workers across South Africa are organizing for a living wage, full-time work, and real job security. These workers are fighting to regain the broad collective bargaining rights they enjoyed across the Protea hotel chain, until the period when the chain was sold to Marriott.

Guidelines ensure that “casual” or “zero-hours” workers can be furloughed as part of the government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and paid at least 80% of average annual earnings — but Marriott told hundreds that it had “yet to determine its position regarding furloughing casual workers.” Workers fought back and organized with Unite Hospitality, and Marriott announced that all its casual workers would be part of the scheme — a major victory to make sure casual workers aren’t left behind during COVID-19.

Every Marriott worker deserves a future where one job is enough. UNITE HERE, the Marriott workers’ union in North America, is fighting for fair contracts and organizing more Marriott workers in new hotels.

In 2018, thousands went on strike at Marriott hotels across the U.S. – and won middle-class wages, affordable health care, and safer workloads.

Since the strike, more than 1,000 Marriott workers have voted to join UNITE HERE, the Marriott workers’ union.

IUF welcomes the following hotels into our federation:

  • Baltimore Marriott Waterfront
  • Irvine Marriott
  • San Francisco Airport Marriott Waterfront
  • Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina

It’s supposed to mean something when you vote, whether your boss likes the result or not. Marriott workers at these hotels voted yes for the union – now it’s time for Marriott to honor its word and settle fair contracts.
